For 60 years, Mr. Shlomo Eliahu has been a symbol of integrity, responsibility and self-made success in the Israeli business community.
Mr. Eliahu was born in Baghdad Iraq, and immigrated with his family to Israel in 1950. The second of nine children, Mr. Eliahu lived first in a transit camp, and then moved to a poor section of Tel Aviv. Despite little formal education, Mr. Eliahu began working from a young age to help support his family. From an early job as a messenger in an insurance company, he began to see and to take advantage of opportunities, and in 1959 founded a successful underwriting agency. Following the success of the underwriting agency, in 1965 Mr. Eliahu established the Eliahu Insurance Company, an enterprise which has since grown to become one of Israel's leading insurance groups.
Over time, Mr. Eliahu expanded the scope of his investments to include significant interests in other insurance companies as well as real estate projects. For the past decade, his largest investments have been in the banking sector which includes major positions in Israel's Bank Leumi and Union Bank.
Through the years, Mr. Eliahu has played an active role in Israeli politics, including serving from 1978-1981 as a Member of Israel's Parliament and serving as the Chairman of its Finance Committee.
Mr. Eliahu's values of hard work, honesty and creativity, along with his deep love for Israel and the Zionist vision, are reflected in his significant philanthropic activities. The organizations that Mr. Eliahu is most closely associated with include:
- Aleh, Israel's largest network of residential facilities for children with severe physical and cognitive disabilities. Currently, Aleh provides 650 children in Israel with high-level medical and rehabilitative care in four residential facilities.
- Tel Aviv University (TAU). For many years, Mr. Eliahu has funded scholarships for excellent students from all backgrounds. Mr. Eliahu currently serves as a Trustee of TAU.
Mr. Eliahu has earned numerous awards and honors in recognition of his many accomplishments, community service and philanthropy.
- In November 2009, Mr. Eliahu received the Adif Prize for Life Work and Contribution to Israel's Insurance Sector
- In February 2010, Mr. Eliahu was conferred the honorary Doctor of Philosophy in recognition of his significant lifetime achievements and his contribution to the Tel Aviv University.
- In March 2010, Mr. Eliahu received Dun & Bradstreet's prestigious Manager of the Year award for excellence in management.
